The papers, in the order they come

A divorce is a sequence of forms, waiting periods and decisions about property, debts, children and support.

Most people stall at the same few points: filing, serving the other spouse and the first financial disclosure. We help spouses who want to file, spouses who have been served, and couples who agree and need the paperwork done right.

Agreeing first

If you and your spouse agree on the children, the house and the debts, we help you put it in a written agreement, and file it. If you do not agree, we help you narrow the list to what a judge actually has to decide.

What we do not take

We do not take divorces that involve a business with several owners, out-of-state property or a complicated pension. We will say so on the screening call and suggest who to ask next.

What the clinic does

Three things we do with you

  1. 01

List what is yours, theirs and shared

A one-page inventory of the house, accounts, debts and belongings, with what each of you wants.

  2. 02

    Draft the agreement

We write what you agree on in plain language so the court can sign it.

  3. 03

    Prepare for the hearing

If something is contested, we get you ready and speak for you if you ask us to.

Questions on this page

How long does a divorce take?

It depends on the court and on whether you agree. Agreements move faster, because there is nothing for a judge to decide.

Do I have to go to court?

Often once, briefly, if you agree. Contested divorces involve more hearings.

Can I get divorced without a lawyer?

Yes. If you want to try, our guides explain each form. We can look over your papers for a flat hour of time.
